The Power of Antioxidant Foods

We live a pretty crazy life. We have our daily stresses from work, home and just general everyday stress. All that can impact on your health, especially if you are not eating a healthy and balanced diet and you are not exercising. The body needs a balance to perform to its peak, and giving the body the nutrients needed is a must to be healthy from the inside out.

Whether it's from daily stresses, unhealthy foods that you eat or air pollution, the body starts to accumulate free radicals, which will consequently impact your overall health. So how can you help your body "heal" from those free radicals?

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that help to protect the cells against the effects of free radicals. They are found in certain foods as well as in supplements. When you are eating a balanced diet, you will naturally consume antioxidants as it's present in fruit and vegetables. You will also produce antioxidants when you exercise.

Why is it important to eliminate free radicals?

Free radicals are formed continuously in the body from daily stress, lifestyle and environment factors. The body needs to maintain a balance of free radicals and antioxidants. Free radicals are also crucial for essential health functions, such as fighting infections.

When free radicals outnumber antioxidants, it puts the body in a state called oxidative stress. This state can lead to:

  • Bloating
  • Feeling tired
  • Not sleeping well
  • Joint inflammation
  • Cancers
  • Heart disease
  • And more

When you have a balanced and healthy diet, you will replenish the body with antioxidants, which will help to eliminate free radicals out of the body.

Which foods you find antioxidants

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Coffee and tea

What about supplements?

There are also plenty of supplements that will help the body to "detoxify/cleanse" of free radicals. However, supplements should not replace a well-balanced diet. There are plenty of supplements that may assist with detoxification or cleansing of free radical from the body.

Greens:

You can have green powders or tablets, which are full of powerful antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Here are my top 3 picks for green foods:

Green supplements are also great for the added fruit and vegetable content to each serve. It's important to remember that these supplements shouldn't replace a healthy diet. Greens are good to complement your diet when you don't have enough greens.

Cleansing:

This type of supplement is excellent to help cleanse your gut from unhealthy choices that you may have made. But the same deal with this supplement eating unhealthily and taking a supplement will not "fix" your bod choices of food.

Here are my top 3 picks:

Digestion:

We all know when your gut is healthy, your whole body is well balanced. Having a good balance of bacteria in the gut is essential for good health, and also to help eliminate free radicals out of the body. When our digestive system is working well, it's a sign of a healthy gut.

3 of my favourite products when it comes to a healthy digestive system:

Final Notes

So as you can see, there are plenty of supplements that can help you detoxify or cleanse the body from free radicals. If you are looking for different alternatives to supplements, you can also add different foods to your diet. A diet that is balanced and has a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains will provide you with plenty of antioxidants.

Supplements will just aid or top up if you are not getting enough. It's always important to remember that you cannot add supplements to your daily routine, expecting to improve your health if you are not looking after what you put in your body.
